Organizational Context
The Global Road Safety Partnership (http://ift.tt/1j0SaP2)
is a hosted programme of the International Federation of Red Cross and
Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The Global Road Safety Partnership’s
mission is to reduce death and serious injuries as a result of road
crashes in low- and middle-income countries. According to the World
Health Organization, road traffic injuries claim more than 1.2 million
lives each year and tremendously affect health and development in low-
and middle-income countries. In fact, road traffic deaths are the
leading cause of death among people aged between 15 and 29 years and
cost governments approximately 3% of GDP. Road Traffic injuries and
deaths represent a manmade, humanitarian crisis and GRSP/IFRC are
committed to evidence-based interventions to address this crisis. The

Global Road Safety (BIGRS), the Global Road Safety Partnership works in
five low- and middle- income countries and ten priority cities to reduce
road crash deaths and serious injuries. In particular, GRSP focuses on
strengthening road safety policies and their implementation through the
provision of grants and technical assistance to local civil society
organizations, Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies, and relevant
government agencies. GRSP also works closely with road police agencies
to strengthen their capability to enforce road safety policies. The
third pillar of GRSP’s work under the BIGRS is in organizign and
implementing a Global Road Safety Leadership Course in partnership with
the Johns Hopkins University’s International Injury Prevention Unit. The
Global Road Safety Leadership Course takes place two times per year.
